Dr. Ikeola Suhurat Olatinwo: Advancing Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity and Digital Education in Nigeria

Dr. Ikeola Suhurat Olatinwo, a distinguished computer scientist, researcher and educator’s recent elevation to the rank of Senior Lecturer marks another significant milestone in an outstanding academic journey.

Dr. Olatinwo has built a reputation as an accomplished scholar whose work continues to influence the fields of Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Information Science and Educational Technology with over two decades of professional experience spanning banking, information technology, academia and research.

She’s born on February 8, 1977.

Dr. Olatinwo began her educational journey with exceptional academic brilliance. She earned a National Diploma in Computer Science with Upper Credit from the Federal Polytechnic, Offa, Kwara State before obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science with Second Class Upper Division from the University of Ilorin in 2000.

She further obtained a Master’s degree and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Computer Science from the same university, while also pursuing a Postgraduate Diploma in Education.

Her academic profile was further strengthened through a prestigious Postdoctoral Fellowship in Computer Science at Khalifa University, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Long before joining academia, she distinguished herself in Nigeria’s banking and information technology sector.

She had served as a System Administrator at African International Bank and later worked with Nestlé Nigeria Plc in System Support before becoming Users Training Coordinator at Demalog Macro Computer Technology in Lagos.

Her passion for teaching eventually led her into academia, beginning at the College of Education, Ilemona, before joining the Federal Polytechnic, Offa, where she rose steadily through the ranks to become a Principal Lecturer and briefly served as Acting Head of the Department of Artificial Intelligence Technology.

In December 2023, she joined the University of Ilorin, where she has continued to make remarkable contributions in teaching, research and academic administration, culminating in her promotion to the rank of Senior Lecturer.

Dr. Olatinwo’s research interests focus on Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Cybersecurity, Geographic Information Systems, Data Mining and Intelligent Systems.

Her scholarly works have addressed practical societal challenges, including adaptive learning for students with disabilities, cancer detection through deep learning, dementia diagnosis, phishing detection, malware classification, augmented reality for education and cloud computing.

Her growing international profile is reflected in numerous publications in reputable local and international journals, conference presentations across Africa and collaborations with researchers from different parts of the world.

She has also supervised postgraduate research and currently serves as a joint Ph.D. supervisor with the Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering at Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences, India.

Beyond research, Dr. Olatinwo has demonstrated exceptional administrative leadership. She has served as Level Adviser, committee secretary, faculty representative and member of several strategic committees at the University of Ilorin.

She is also an E-Tutor with the University’s Centre for Open and Distance Learning, an Adjunct Lecturer at Lead City University and Acting Head of the Information Technology Department at West Mainland Open University, Lagos.

Her expertise has earned her recognition beyond the classroom. She serves as a resource person for the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), participates in programme accreditation exercises, and has contributed to institutional development through several leadership roles.

Professionally, she is an active member of the Computer Professionals Registration Council of Nigeria (CPN), Nigeria Computer Society (NCS), Nigeria Women in Information Technology (NIWIIT), Academia in Information Technology Profession (AITP) and the Practical Artificial Intelligence Development Foundation (PAIDeF).

A recipient of numerous academic awards dating back to her student days, and these include Best Female Computer Science Student and several distinctions in Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science.

Dr. Olatinwo has consistently exemplified excellence throughout her career.

More recently, she received leadership and project coordination awards from the Nigeria Association of Computer Science Students and was honoured as a panelist at the Kwara State Education Conference on Future-Ready Education.

Furthermore, she serves as Public Relations Officer II of the Nigeria Computer Society, Kwara State Chapter, General Secretary II of the Offa Professional Ladies Forum (OPLAF), and Matron of Teens Youth Club, Offa.
