Protest In Niger State As Robbers Stab Student To Death
A student of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, has been killed in an armed robbery incident in Lapai, Niger State, prompting public outrage and a protest.
In a statement on Monday, the Niger State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said the incident occurred at about 2:30 a.m. on 23rd June 2025, when unidentified assailants attacked a student lodge in the Ndakitabu area on the outskirts of Lapai.
He said they received a distress call at approximately 3:00 a.m., prompting operatives from the Lapai Division to respond. However, the attackers had already fled the scene before officers arrived.
The police added that one of the students, simply identified as Jafar, was found with a stab wound to the neck. He was rushed to the General Hospital in Lapai, where he was later confirmed dead.
News of the attack triggered protests by students, who barricaded the Agaie–Lapai Road to demand justice.
The demonstration disrupted vehicular movement for hours before police teams were deployed to restore order.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Adamu Elleman, condemned the attack and ordered a manhunt for the perpetrators.
He assured the public that a thorough investigation was underway and pledged that those responsible would be brought to justice.
While calm has been restored, students and residents still call for increased protection in and around student communities.
