“When vision meets innovation, a national institution becomes a global symbol.”

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has once again written its name in gold with the commissioning of a Computer-Based Examination (CBE) Centre in London, United Kingdom the first of its kind outside Nigeria. This bold and unprecedented move marks a new dawn for Nigeria’s public examination system and underscores the visionary leadership of Professor Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, the Registrar and Chief Executive of NECO.

For the first time in history, Nigerians in the diaspora who wish to sit for the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) External will no longer need to travel home. The new London CBE Centre provides a modern, accessible, and credible platform for thousands of Nigerians abroad to obtain NECO certification with ease. It saves time, reduces costs, and eliminates the logistical constraints that have long discouraged diaspora participation in national examinations.

“Education is the bridge that connects citizens to their homeland, no matter where they reside,” Professor Wushishi said during the commissioning ceremony. “With this London centre, NECO has crossed that bridge ensuring that every Nigerian, at home or abroad, has access to credible and world-class assessment.”

This milestone is not an isolated achievement. It is part of NECO’s broader transformation agenda under Professor Wushishi’s leadership one that emphasizes accessibility, credibility, and digital innovation. Since assuming office, the NECO boss has led a sweeping digital reform, from automating registration and result systems to deploying biometric verification and tightening examination integrity mechanisms.

These reforms have repositioned NECO as not merely a national examination body but a globally recognised assessment authority. With the London CBE Centre, NECO now joins the ranks of international testing institutions such as Cambridge Assessment International Education and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) International Division proving that Nigeria can indeed export excellence.

Education stakeholders have applauded the development as a testament to progressive leadership. According to Dr. Halima Yusuf, an Abuja-based education consultant, “NECO’s digital expansion to the UK proves that Nigerian institutions can compete globally. It is a clear message that when vision meets commitment, global recognition follows.”

By fully adopting computer-based examinations, NECO has moved decisively into the future enhancing transparency, curbing malpractice, and ensuring real-time monitoring and faster result processing. These are the hallmarks of 21st-century assessment and a direct reflection of Professor Wushishi’s pragmatic leadership.

Under his stewardship, NECO has also deepened partnerships with other educational and technological institutions, promoting innovation while restoring public confidence in the Council’s integrity. His approach combines administrative discipline with academic depth qualities drawn from his rich background as a scholar, reformer, and public administrator.

The London CBE Centre therefore stands not merely as a facility, but as a symbol of institutional evolution a visible reminder of what leadership anchored in vision, integrity, and innovation can achieve. It reflects NECO’s readiness to serve a global audience while upholding the Council’s founding principles of fairness, reliability, and excellence.

Nigerians in the United Kingdom and across Europe can now conveniently register for the 2025 SSCE External through NECO’s online portal and select the London centre as their examination venue. The Council has directed its staff to provide all necessary assistance to ensure a smooth and inclusive registration process for interested candidates.

In truth, this achievement deserves not only applause but national celebration. Professor Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi has demonstrated that leadership, when guided by vision and integrity, can turn an institution into a symbol of national pride. NECO’s footprint in London is more than an administrative expansion it is Nigeria’s intellectual presence abroad and a milestone in the nation’s educational diplomacy.

As Nelson Mandela once reminded the world, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
Through this bold initiative, Professor Wushishi and NECO have sharpened that weapon for Nigerians, everywhere.
