N-HYPPADEC SHOWCASES INTERVENTIONS TO FARMERS ACROSS MEMBERS’STATES AT AIFF AGRIC SHOW.
The National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) recorded a remarkable presence at the Agricultural Show and Seed Festival held as part of the 2026 Argungu International Fishing and Cultural Festival.
The Agricultural Show and Seed Festival, which marks the second day of the UNESCO-recognised and largest fishing festival in Africa, took place at the Agric Show Field in Argungu. The event showcased agricultural produce, natural resources, crafts, and the rich cultural heritage of the Kebbi people.
During a tour of the N-HYPPADEC pavilion led by the Emir of Argungu, HRH Alhaji Muhammad Samai’la Mera, alongside the Emir of Kagara, Alhaji Attahiru Ahmed Gunna II, and other prominent traditional rulers from across the country, the Managing Director of N-HYPPADEC, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa (Katukan Yauri), highlighted the Commission’s wide-ranging interventions and inputs distributed to farmers in hydropower-producing areas.
He stated that the Commission has distributed power tillers, pesticides, herbicides, subsidised fertilisers, and life jackets to farmers and riverine communities. All these, he said, were to enhance the capacity of smallholder farmers for increased productivity and income generation in agribusiness.
He further disclosed that the Commission has cleared logs from waterways to mitigate boat mishaps and trained over 5,000 youths in various skills, including fish farming, to promote self-reliance.
According to the Managing Director, these interventions are in fulfilment of the Commission’s mandate to support host communities in mitigating ecological and environmental challenges as well as boosting socio-economic activities in the areas.
He noted that the life jackets distributed through traditional rulers and community leaders are of premium quality, assuring that they would drastically reduce casualties during mishaps.
“When there is a boat mishap, a commuter wearing this life jacket can remain afloat for several hours before assistance arrives. We distributed them through our chiefs and emirs. They were provided free of charge,” he said.
He added that the youth empowerment programme has enabled many young people to become gainfully employed and contribute meaningfully to the local economy.
Mr. Yelwa also revealed that the Commission is distributing seedlings to farmers to establish shelterbelts across its member states, in support of environmental sustainability and in line with the Federal Government’s agroforestry initiative.
He commended the Kebbi State Government for its commitment to the revival of the Annual Argungu International Fishing and Cultural Festival and thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR for his support in achieving the desired objectives.
