President Tinubu Approves ₦15bn for NEMA to Prepare for Flooding; New Agribusiness Policy to Boost Food Security
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved ₦15 billion for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to prepare ahead of expected floods during the rainy season. Vice President Kashim Shettima announced this during a Presidential Food Systems Coordinating Unit (PFSCU) Steering Committee meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. He described it as one of the administration’s first proactive measures against seasonal flooding.
Additionally, the Federal Government is set to launch the National Agribusiness Policy Mechanism (NAPM) in June 2025 to strengthen agricultural productivity, stabilize food prices, and drive economic growth. The NAPM will coordinate agricultural activities across federal, state, and local levels using real-time data analytics.
The Executive Secretary of PFSCU, Marion Moon, explained that the policy aims to address challenges such as high food inflation, inefficient subsidies, and poor agricultural yields. A digital platform to support data-driven decision-making is under development, and the pilot phase has been completed across 13 states.
The meeting had in attendance top officials including Governors Umar Namadi (Jigawa) and Biodun Oyebanji (Ekiti), Deputy Governors Umar Kadafur (Borno) and Patricia Onyemaechi Obila (Ebonyi), Agriculture and Food Security Ministers, as well as representatives from private sector agriculture and international development partners.
