10 Kwara APC Guber Aspirants Threaten Defection Amidst Crisis
Ten governorship aspirants of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Kwara State have threatened to abandon the ruling party ahead of the 2027 general elections unless President Bola Tinubu urgently intervenes in what they described as a worsening crisis within the state chapter of the party.
The aspirants, in a joint letter addressed to the President and dated June 19, 2026, warned that the APC’s electoral fortunes in Kwara could be severely jeopardised if the current political situation in the state remained unchecked.
The signatories to the letter include Senator Saliu Mustapha, Ambassador Yahaya Seriki, Senator Yahaya Oloriegbe, Dele Belgore (SAN), Dr Oluwatoyin Alabi, Capt. Ahmad Mahmud, Alhajin Tajudeen Audu, Dr Azeez Salako, Dr Bashir Bolarinwa and Hon. Omar Muhammed Bio.
The group accused Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of alienating key stakeholders who contributed to the party’s rise to power through the 2019 Otoge movement, alleging that many loyal members had been excluded from both party and government affairs.
The aspirants said the development had weakened the APC’s political base and emboldened opposition elements in the state.
They warned that continued dissatisfaction among party stakeholders could trigger defections and threaten the APC’s chances in future elections.
The letter read in part, “We must state without ambiguity that if the present trajectory is allowed to continue, the electoral prospects of the APC in Kwara State in all elections, including the presidential election, will be severely imperilled.
“Indeed, many stakeholders may be left with no choice but to seek alternative political platforms to pursue their aspirations in 2027.”
The aspirants appealed to Tinubu to personally intervene in the affairs of the party in Kwara to avert what they described as a looming political crisis.
They urged the President to review recent developments within the party, including what they termed the announcement of results for primaries that did not hold, and take steps to restore confidence among aggrieved members.
The group also requested the President to carefully assess the credentials, loyalty and acceptability of governorship aspirants in the state and support a candidate capable of uniting party members ahead of the next election cycle.
According to them, “Among us is a leader capable of providing fresh direction, restoring internal unity, rebuilding stakeholder confidence and strengthening the APC’s support base.”
The aspirants pledged to support any consensus candidate endorsed by Tinubu and the party leadership, saying they were prepared to mobilise their structures and resources to secure victory for APC candidates in the 2027 elections.
“We give our solemn assurance that we will rally behind any consensus candidate acceptable to Your Excellency and the party,” they stated.
The development comes amid growing political permutations in Kwara APC ahead of the battle for the party’s governorship ticket and the 2027 general elections.
