Aisha Buhari Reveals Aso Rock Rumours Made Late President Doubt Her, Disrupted His Health Routine
Former First Lady, Aisha Buhari, has revealed that her late husband, President Muhammadu Buhari, briefly believed rumours within the Presidential Villa that she planned to poison him, a situation that negatively affected his health and daily routines.
The disclosure is contained in a newly launched biography, From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari, written by Dr. Charles Omole and unveiled on Monday at the State House, Abuja.
According to Mrs. Buhari, the rumours led the former president to temporarily alter his habits, including locking his room, delaying or skipping meals, and stopping vital supplements she had managed for years to support his health. She explained that these disruptions, rather than poisoning or any mysterious illness, contributed to Buhari’s 2017 health crisis, which resulted in a 154-day medical leave in the United Kingdom.
“Then came the gossip and the fearmongering. They said I wanted to kill him. My husband believed them for a week or so,” she was quoted as saying in the book.
She added that Buhari’s health improved rapidly after proper nutrition and supplements were restored in London, noting that he discarded his walking stick within three days.
The biography also sheds light on mistrust within the Presidential Villa, including allegations of surveillance and the widely circulated but unfounded “Jibril of Sudan” body double theory.
The 600-page, 22-chapter book chronicles Buhari’s life from his childhood in Daura, Katsina State, to his death in a London hospital in July 2025 at the age of 82.
