El-Rufai’s family: Emir Sanusi Stands By Us
By AbdurRaheem Sa’ad Dembo
The family of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has rejected claims that the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, abandoned or neglected the former governor amid his ongoing legal tussles.
El-Rufai’s wife, Asia Mohammed Ahmad, made the clarification while reacting to an article by Professor Farooq Kperogi titled, “Sanusi and the Betrayal of El-Rufai,” published in his column in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Ahmad said Sanusi had remained supportive of the family, describing the Emir as their father and saying the family will continue to respect him.
“I want to clarify that HRH is with us and Mallam’s post has nothing to do with HRH SLS, so pls stop alluding to things that you don’t know!” she wrote on Facebook.
She added, “I am glad to note that Kperogi mentioned that there may be things people don’t know.”
El-Rufai’s son, Bello, also backed his mother’s position, saying Sanusi remained their father and had stood by the family.
“Indeed Emir Muhammadu Sanusi remains our Father and he truly stands with us,” he said.
Some respondents to Ahmad’s post also argued that Sanusi, as a traditional ruler, had limited powers to intervene in the legal proceedings involving the former governor.
One of the commentators, Muhammad Bello, described Kperogi’s article as “simply goofing”, arguing that the Emir had no direct role in the case.
“Muhammadu Sanusi II, the Emir of Kano, just like other Emirs, is controlled by the governor; so I don’t see how the Emir of Kano will interfere in the El-Rufai case,” he wrote.
