NiMet Alerts 19 States to Brace for Heat Stress, Urges Immediate Safety Measures
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a warning to residents in 19 states, the South-East region, and coastal areas, urging them to prepare for imminent heat stress conditions.
The agency highlighted that the north-central and eastern states, including Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Kogi, Nasarawa, Benue, Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Ebonyi, Cross River, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), will bear the brunt of the rising temperatures.
Additionally, vulnerable regions such as the South-West, coastal areas, Taraba, Adamawa, Plateau, Kaduna, Zamfara, and Sokoto are also at risk.
In its early morning alert on Tuesday, NiMet revealed that soaring temperatures and elevated humidity levels over the next three to four days could trigger thermal discomfort across these regions.
The agency emphasized the potential health hazards, including fatigue, irritability, reduced focus, impaired motor skills, and a decline in productivity.
NiMet urged residents in the affected areas to take proactive steps to safeguard their health. The agency advised, “Stay cool by using fans, air conditioning, or shaded spaces, and dress light by wearing breathable clothing.
“Drink plenty of water, avoid peak sun hours (12 PM – 3 PM). VU Use sun protection like hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen.”
