Shari’a Council Criticizes Muslim-Muslim Ticket Over Unmet Expectations
The Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria (SCSN) has voiced disappointment over the Muslim-Muslim ticket that brought President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima to power in 2023, stating that it has not delivered the anticipated benefits for the Muslim community.
Speaking at a Pre-Ramadan Lecture, SCSN President Sheikh Abdurrasheed Hadiyyatullah criticized the administration for not addressing the concerns of Nigerian Muslims, despite initial hopes that the leadership would work in their favor.
“We have witnessed Nigerians elect two Muslims to the highest offices without the nation descending into chaos, yet justice and fairness have not been ensured for all communities, regardless of their faith,” Hadiyyatullah stated.
He expressed concerns that millions of Muslims remain politically sidelined in various parts of the country despite their numbers and constitutional rights. He also condemned attempts to limit the rights of South West Muslims to establish systems that would promote peaceful coexistence with Christians in their communities.
“We stand with our brothers and sisters in the South West and caution those attempting to divide the Nigerian Muslim Umma to redirect their energy elsewhere,” he said.
Hadiyyatullah further criticized the federal government over the worsening economic hardship, urging immediate intervention to ease Nigerians’ suffering.
“The Umma looks to us for direction and reassurance that their faith will not be sacrificed for political gain. Many Muslims now feel betrayed for supporting this administration,” he added.
