Tinubu, govs seek stronger policies for women’s empowerment
President Bola Tinubu, his wife, Oluremi Tinubu, governors, lawmakers and civil society organisations, on Sunday, called for stronger policies, investments and concrete actions to empower women and advance gender equality as Nigeria joined the world to mark the 2026 International Women’s Day.
Leading the charge, President Tinubu declared that Nigeria’s progress will continue to empower women and create conditions where every girl can learn and every woman can thrive economically.
He lauded Nigerian women as the backbone holding the nation together through their strength, courage and determination.
He said, “Across our homes, farms, markets, offices, and the halls of leadership, Nigerian women continue to demonstrate strength, courage and determination that help hold our nation together.”
International Women’s Day, observed annually on March 8, is a global celebration of women’s achievements and a call for gender equality and the advancement of women’s rights.
The 2026 theme, “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls,” emphasises the need for concrete action to protect women’s rights and ensure justice across all sectors of society.
Tinubu highlighted the multifaceted roles Nigerian women play as mothers who nurture, entrepreneurs who build, professionals who lead and citizens who shape the nation’s destiny with resilience and dignity.
