Zidane Replaces Deschamps as Head Coach of France
The former France playmaker, who won the 1998 World Cup and the 2000 European Championship as a player, has been appointed head coach of the French national team, succeeding Didier Deschamps, the French Football Federation (FFF) announced. Zidane takes over from his former teammate Deschamps, who had been in charge since 2012; Deschamps’ tenure ended with a fourth-place finish at the 2026 World Cup, following a title win in 2018 and a final appearance in 2022.
The French Football Federation (FFF) announced Zidane’s appointment on Tuesday.
Zidane is expected to lead France through the 2030 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The 54-year-old replaces Didier Deschamps, the longest-serving French head coach who managed the team for 14 years. Deschamps won the World Cup in 2018 and led France to two World Cup finals.
Zidane, who won a record-setting three consecutive UEFA Champions League titles with Real Madrid, has been out of work since 2021 before his latest appointment.
Speaking on his new job, the Real Madrid and Juventus legend stated his joy and pride at his appointment to the greatest job in football. He also appreciated his predecessor, acknowledged the responsibility handed to him, and his ambition for the team.
“I’ve often said it: there’s nothing greater than the French national team. So it’s a joy and obviously a great source of pride to become the manager of this French national team,” he added.
“It’s also a responsibility. I want to thank President Philippe Diallo, the executive committee, and the French Football Federation for their confidence and acknowledge the 14 years of service from Didier and his staff.
“I also have a special thought today for all my coaches. Needless to say, I have high ambitions for the French national team.”
In his remarks, Diallo, FFF president, added that Zidane’s appointment is a source of national pride. He added that his profile matches the potential of the national team.
“The appointment of Zinedine Zidane as head coach of the French national team is a source of immense pride for the French Football Federation.
“It marks the meeting of a legend in the history of Les Bleus, who has become one of the most decorated and respected coaches of his generation, and a team with rare potential, driven by the highest ambitions.”
Zidane will take charge of his first match as France national team coach in the UEFA Nations League against Turkey in September.
